World Trade Center Janitor to Speak at

River Lodge Conference Center in Fortuna

A Benefit for the First Responders of 9/11 and their Families

On 9/11/2001, janitor William Rodriguez rescued many people from the World Trade Center.  Having worked at the WTC for almost 20 years, Mr. Rodriguez first rescued people from the basement levels, then from a flooding elevator, and then from the upper floors.  At great risk to his own life, Mr. Rodriguez re-entered the North Tower multiple times.  Mr. Rodriguez bravely led firefighters up the stairs, unlocking doors with his master key as they ascended, thereby aiding in the evacuation of many people.  He also helped firefighters find an alternative exit in the chaos just a few minutes before the collapse.  Mr. Rodriguez survived by diving beneath a fire truck where he was trapped for over two hours.  He is believed to be the last male civilian to have exited the North Tower without any aid.  He is commonly referred to as the “Last Man Out”.

Mr. Rodriguez is one of only 20 miraculous survivors to be pulled alive from the rubble.  The events of that day had a profound spiritual impact upon him, leading him to believe in a Higher Power after being an agnostic.  In the wake of the tragedy, he was active in seeking to establish a 9/11 Commission and he continues to work on 9/11 related issues.

What People Have Said

“If it wasn’t for that maintenance guy, Willie Rodriguez, there would have been a couple more firemen dead…he saved the lives of at least 12 people that day, at least.  Firefighter John Schroeder, one of the persons guided out of the North Tower by William Rodriguez

“A man came into the office, in shock.  He had multiple wounds, his arms were bleeding, his skin was peeling off.  William grabbed a cloth and wrapped it around him.  At the time, nobody really wanted to go near him because he was just covered in blood.  But William did what he had to do and got him to safety.”  Anthony Salta La Macchia, Mr. Rodriguez’s Supervisor on 9/11/2001

ABOUT THE FEALGOOD FOUNDATION

The primary mission of the FealGood Foundation, a non-profit organization, is to spread awareness and educate the public about the catastrophic health effects on 9/11 first responders, as well as to provide assistance to relieve these great heroes of the financial burdens placed on them over the last five years. A secondary goal of our Foundation is to create a network of advocacy on 9/11 healthcare issues. We not only advocate for Ground Zero workers, but show others how they can advocate for themselves and help others through grassroots activism.
